Rainy Day

We don't believe the childhood song which goes "Rain, rain, go away... "

Rainy days are a part of summer, and they are a lot of fun in the Jackson area!

Without rain ...

  • our rivers and waterfalls would be just a trickle
  • wildflowers would not flourish
  • wildlife would not be as visible for our enjoyment
  • golf courses and lawns would not be as green and lush
  • Wildquack River Festival race would be more challenging
  • and there would be no rainbows!

Don't change your vacation plans because of rain in the forecast!

Just come prepared to enjoy everything the area has to offer. Plan a walk or hike in the rain, go biking and get muddy. If you are traveling with your family, kids will love playing in the rain, and if you're not, being out in the rain will make you feel like a kid again.

Here are some suggestions for things to do...

Jackson Village Shopping Tour
Grab an umbrella (many lodging properties have some available for your use) and walk the Jackson loop around the village stopping along the way at art galleries, Flossie's Emporium, Ravenwood Curio Shoppe and visit the Jackson Historical Society. Allow time for a refreshment stop or lunch at Yesterday's, J-Town Deli and Country Store or Thompson House Eatery.

Biking
Grab your rain jacket and mountain bike the smooth-packed dirt or single-track trails through forests and meadows at Great Glen Trails or try Nordic Walking, an outdoor activity popular in Europe which is now available here!

Guided Sightseeing Tour
Ride the Auto Road van to the summit of Mt. Washington and visit the Observatory museum.

Relax and Enjoy the View
Pull up a rocker on the 280 foot wrap around verandah at Eagle Mountain House to sip the beverage of your choice or enjoy lunch while you enjoy the spectacular views of their golf course, surrounding farm land and mountains. On rainy days, watch as clouds settle in over the mountains and wait for summits to peak through as the weather begins to clear.

Skip the Crowds
At Story Land, most of the rides and attractions stay open in the rain, lines are practically non-existent, and when your family is dressed for it playing in the rain can be quite enjoyable for everyone regardless of age. Rain ponchos are sold at the Story Land gift shops at very reasonable rates.

If you prefer to avoid the rain ...
Find a comfy spot in the common area of your lodging property where you can enjoy board games, puzzles and cards or a selection of books to read. In a time where work follows us everywhere with cell phones, taking time away from it all is truly a luxury! Pamper yourself with a spa treatment or a full day at Carriage House Spa at the Christmas Farm Inn.

The area offers other options... Visit the Mt. Washington Observatory Weather Discovery Center Visit the new MWV Children's Museum Tax-free shopping at over a hundred name-brand outlets or specialty shops, many offering locally made products Enjoy a performance by one of the area theatre companies
