About History of Railroading in MWV

The town of Conway was founded in 1765 and for the next 109 years the only way for the townspeople to get from one place to another was by walking, riding a horse, or being transported in wagons pulled by horses.
In 1874 this all changed for the better with the arrival of the railroad. With the ‘iron horse’ it was now possible for the people of Conway, and their goods, to be transported fast and efficiently for great distances in safety and comfort.
Join Dwight Smith to learn more about how trains transformed life in the Mt Washington Valley.

Local resident for the past 44 years, Dwight Smith worked for Boston & Maine RR in Boston, for over 25 years. He retired from there to spend time on his goal of restoring the 1874 North Conway railroad system and to establish the Conway Scenic Railroad. Both of which he was successful at and which he retired from in 1990.
This program is free and open to the public.
